WCP Zambia
This is Not A Game Campaign
Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP), in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), has launched Zambia’s first campaign targeting the illegal bushmeat trade.
Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP), in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), has launched Zambia’s first targeted communication campaign addressing the illegal bushmeat trade. This initiative focuses on reducing demand for illegal bushmeat consumption, which is a key driver of wildlife crime in the region.
The campaign applies a structured communication approach to provide clear and relevant information on the risks and consequences of illegal bushmeat trade for biodiversity, national security, and economic stability. It aims to support informed decision-making and reduce demand for illegally sourced wildlife products.
The campaign uses a range of media channels, including social media, television, radio, and billboards, to ensure broad national coverage across urban and rural areas.
In addition, the campaign incorporates partnerships with media producers and content platforms to deliver messaging through widely viewed programming formats, increasing reach and accessibility of information.
A central component of the campaign is the use of data and research to inform messaging. Baseline analysis identifies urban consumers as a key segment in the illegal bushmeat market. By focusing on areas with the highest demand, the campaign supports targeted communication efforts aimed at reducing consumption.
The campaign also provides information on legally sourced game meat as an alternative to illegal bushmeat. In partnership with the Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia (WPAZ), the initiative highlights the availability of legal supply chains and supports compliance with wildlife regulations.
Illegal bushmeat hunting and trade contribute to the depletion of wildlife populations, including species such as elephants, pangolins, and antelopes, and undermine conservation and enforcement efforts. By reducing demand, the campaign contributes to broader efforts to combat wildlife crime and protect natural resources.
Through coordinated communication, partnerships, and evidence-based messaging, WCP and DNPW are working to reduce illegal bushmeat consumption and strengthen wildlife protection efforts in Zambia.
